Spelling Bee in the Second Semester of the Academic Year 2022

Competition Rules

 

1.      Registration:

(1)       Qualifications: Undergraduate students taking general English courses.

(2)       Registration Deadline: Wednesday, May 3, 2023, 5 p.m.

(3)       Date and Time of Competition: Wednesday, May 10, 2023, 12:30 noon ~ 3:30 p.m.

(4)       Venue: Main Campus Rm.50414 & 50415 of Teaching Building

(5)       Method: Students at the beginner level may sign up voluntarily, while those at the intermediate or advanced level are eligible to take part in the competition only on the recommendation of their course instructors. Up to one student from each intermediate class and up to two students from each advanced class can take part in the competition.

(6)       Participating students will compete under two groups: Group A (containing students at the beginner and intermediate levels) and Group B (containing students at the advanced level only). The number of contestants in each group is limited to thirty, and participating students are only permitted to compete in the group they belong to. If the number of students signing up for the competition exceeds the maximum allowed for each group, registrations will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis.

2.      Competition Rules:

(1)       Questions are randomly generated from the English news stories posted on the Chinese website of the Bilingual Education and EMI Center. Participating students should visit the website and carefully read from the very first English news story until the one posted on April 15, 2023.

(3)       The competition is conducted in three rounds: Round 1, Round 2, and the Final. Contestants of both Group A and Group B compete according to the following rules.

(4)       All contestants are required to arrive at the competition venue, report to the Organizer by showing their student ID cards AND photo identification documents, and be seated at designated seats at least fifteen minutes before the competition begins. Anyone who fails to report to the Organizer before the time limit specified will be disqualified from the competition.

(5)       In Round 1, the Host gives the contestant a hint by speaking a word and a sentence containing the word in ten seconds.

(6)       The contestant spells out the word and shows the word written on the board in five seconds. Please refer to P.3 for examples.

(7)       When answering each question, the contestant should spell out the word and show the word written on the board in five seconds. Otherwise, he/she is considered failing in the question, and the Host gives the next question.

(8)       All contestants should spell out words in the base form of a verb or in the singular form of a noun.

(9)       In Round 1, each contestant is asked to answer five questions. Only those answering three or more questions correctly will advance to the next round.

(10)   The competition rules for Round 2 are the same as those for Round 1, and the only difference is that contestants successfully advancing to Round 2 must answer four or more questions correctly to advance to the Final.

(11)   In the Final, contestants take turns to answer questions. The one who answers the question correctly continues to compete; the one who gives a wrong answer will be eliminated.

(12)   Prize winners will be selected among all contestants getting through in the Final. If the number of contestants getting through in the Final is less than the number of prizes, prize winners will be selected among all contestants competing in the Final.

3.      Prizes:

(1)       A certificate of participation is awarded to all contestants.

(2)       Group A:

1st Place: NT$3,000 and a certificate of merit

2nd Place: NT$2,500 and a certificate of merit

3rd Place: NT$2,000 and a certificate of merit

5 Honorary Awards: NT$1,000 and a certificate of merit each

(3)       Group B:

1st Place: NT$3,000 and a certificate of merit

2nd Place: NT$2,500 and a certificate of merit

3rd Place: NT$2,000 and a certificate of merit

5 Honorary Awards: NT$1,000 and a certificate of merit each

4.      Notes:

(1)       Peeping, chatting, sending messages, or interfering with other contestants is strictly prohibited during the competition.

(2)       If a contestant has contracted COVID-19 or has to self-quarantine, he/she should inform the Bilingual Education and EMI Center and withdraw from the competition.

(3)       All contestants should fill out the Competition Entry Form correctly and truthfully. Any contestant who is found to have used a false or assumed name or has no necessary qualifications for the competition will be disqualified from the competition. If such a contestant has received a prize and a certificate of merit, the Organizer reserves the right to ask the contestant to return the prize and the certificate of merit and to nullify the winnership of the contestant. Any doubts about a contestant’s qualifications may be raised at the competition venue.

(4)       Pursuant to taxation laws of the Republic of China, a tax rate of 20% is applicable to winning contestants who are foreigners and stay in Taiwan for less than 183 days, and therefore, the Organizer will deduct 20% from their prizes. If any winning contestant is unwilling to cooperate, he/she will be considered voluntarily giving up the prize, and the prize will not be awarded to another contestant.

(5)       All contestants are prohibited from reading vocabulary or browsing web pages with their smartphones, tablets, laptops, or computers from the beginning of the competition until the end of the competition.

(6)       The Organizer reserves the right to amend or change prizes and competition rules.

Contestant A:

Host:

That is correct. 5th question is Moon, Moon. The moon is shining brightly tonight.

Contestant A:

Host:

That is correct. Congratulations. There are 4 correct answers. You are able to enter the second round.

Contestant A:
