Teach Remotely (For Faculty)

As COVID-19 continues to rage around the world, ISU provides students with distance education, both synchronous and asynchronous, to safeguard their right to education after taking into consideration the government’s preventive measures and the uncertainty of the pandemic.

Check and update your personal information on the ISU Official Directory Inquiry System so that we can contact you while you are working remotely.

If you have any questions about how to teach remotely, please feel free to contact the Center for Teaching and Learning Development via Line or by email (ting622@isu.edu.tw)

The guidelines on remote teaching provide general information and helpful advice about how to choose tools for remote teaching.

Make sure you have the following resources and equipment required for remote teaching:

  • smooth internet connections in the place where you teach remotely;
  • a laptop or a personal computer; and
  • other tools required for remote teaching, such as a webcam, a pair of earphones, a microphone, and a headset.

You may use ISU Moodle to interact and discuss with students, upload teaching materials for students to learn on their own, and set assignments and hold quizzes to understand students’ learning effectiveness.

  • To learn more about ISU Moodle, please log in to the platform to read the user manual.
  • Please feel free to call 07-6577711 ext. 2146 or johanna305@isu.edu.tw if you have any further questions about ISU Moodle.

Virtual Office Hours: You are strongly recommended to use the chat tools on ISU Moodle or the feature of “team chat” on Microsoft Teams to have instant real-time interaction with students. These tools can help you offer better counseling and guidance during office hours.

Tools for Synchronous Teaching

Please see this table for the three tools for synchronous teaching recommended by ISU, including Office365-Teams, Adobe Connect, and Google Meet. In the table, you will also find the user manual for each tool. Please install the software/app on your personal computer/mobile phone to make video conferencing with colleagues or students.

Safety Tips for Video Conferencing Software

  • Make sure that the personal computer or laptop you use for video conferencing is safe, such as frequent security updates of the operating system, a strong (complex) login password, and antivirus software and the latest virus pattern files.
  • Use video conferencing software which you can log in with your ISU Webmail account and password, such as Teams and Google Meet. If you choose software other than the two mentioned above, you are strongly recommended to use a brand new account name and password instead of creating a new account via Facebook, Google+, etc./li>
  • If you are going to call an important meeting, you are strongly recommended to inform attendees of the meeting password or code by phone, via SMS or Line.
  • You may create a new user account in the operating system, and then log in to the new user account to call/attend a video conference. After the meeting is over, you can then switch back to the original user account.
  • Always bear in mind that no software is 100% safe. Information security should be your prime concern when using any software.
  • For more information about video conferencing software, please visit: ISU Homepage → Administration → Office of Library and Information Services → Information Services → Teaching with Technology → Video Conferencing.
